About the role:

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Human Resources, the Human Resources Business Partner (“HRBP”) supports Arbutus’s Talent Acquisition capability and acts as a business partner to assigned internal clients, to provide HR expertise in support of achieving Arbutus’s business strategy and objectives. The HRBP is the primary point of contact for defined internal clients. As such, the HRBP advises on and provides “hands-on” services related to workforce planning and talent acquisition; employee engagement; organizational development; benefits; and performance management. The HRBP will be involved in a breadth of Human Resources initiatives in a fast-growing, dynamic biotech environment.

 Responsibilities will include:

  • Participating in defining and maintaining the recruitment requirements and a strategy to meet those requirements. Guiding and assisting internal hiring managers on recruiting and sourcing alternatives appropriate for their business.
  • Developing a thorough understanding of Arbutus’ business, job families and the market sectors it operates in to ensure competitiveness in talent acquisition.
  • Leveraging technology, driving searches and maintaining the database of candidate profiles.
  • Communicating with and educating hiring managers on recruitment best practices and internal processes, acting as the trusted advisor for the assessment and qualification of candidates, and processing changes.
  • Working in partnership with the business to manage employee relations. Building management responsibility and capability for managing ER issues where appropriate.
  • Coordinating new employee onboarding process including preparation of offers and ensuring new hire documentation is completed.
  • Keeping all HR documentation up to date in support of systems and processes and maintaining electronic HR files and Arbutus’ Human Resources Information System.
  • Managing, tracking and maintaining exemplary HR records including invoicing, relocation, immigration, employee files, and job descriptions.
  • Administering US group benefits plans including processing new enrollments, changes and terminations.
  • Equipping line managers with appropriate tools and knowledge to effectively manage their teams according to their people plans e.g. performance management, absence management, career management etc.
  • Supporting HR projects as required.
  • Other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Human Resources or a related discipline preferred with 5 years directly related experience and/or training; or a combination of 8 years education and HR experience.
  • Professional or recruitment designation (e.g. SHRM, RPR, PHR) an asset.
  • Experience in a biotech or pharmaceutical environment an asset.
  • Proven track record of success building a high quality talent pipeline preferably in a technical or scientific domain. Experience working with professionals in a fast paced environment, often with tight deadlines.
  • Knowledge of and skill configuring and utilizing an applicant tracking system; experience with human resources information systems.
  • Experience administering health, dental, insurance and 401K programs.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power-Point).
  • Able to work effectively with others, outside the line of formal authority and use appropriate interaction skills and methods to guide others to make a decision or accomplish work; excellent interpersonal relations and demonstrated ability to work with others effectively in teams; possesses a client service mindset.
  • Demonstrates ability to develop tracking systems and standardized procedures that stand up to internal/external audit or assessment.
  • Demonstrates a high degree of initiative to resolve issues within defined procedures and policies.
  • Demonstrates ability to problem-solve and implement improvements to enhance efficiency.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to exercise sound judgement and discretion when managing confidential and sensitive information.
  • Above-average ability to effectively organize and prioritize work assignments with minimal direction and supervision.
  • Proven organizational skills and attention to detail.
