At Arbutus we have a vision: to cure chronic Hepatitis B virus (HBV). We have a dedicated and innovative team and we are uniquely positioned to transform the HBV treatment landscape. We are developing a portfolio of drug candidates with multiple mechanisms of action that we believe will result in a combination therapy to cure HBV.

Role Summary:

The Assistant Controller will manage the accounting function, including general ledger maintenance and financial reporting. The position will be integral in ensuring compliance with internal controls over accounting processes and will interface regularly with outside auditors. The Assistant Controller will oversee the quarterly close and manage a team of 2-3 accounting professionals. This is a hands-on role, reporting to the Controller.

Duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Manage the accounting function, including quarter-end close and accounts payable.
  •  Implement new accounting policies, procedures and systems, as appropriate.   Ensure internal control procedures are adequate, properly documented, operating effectively and regularly reviewed.
  • Assist with quarterly and annual financial reporting and preparation of financial statements in compliance with GAAP. Play an integral part in the preparation, along with the Controller, of all SEC filings.
  • Serve as a technical accounting lead. Conduct research and document accounting positions for significant transactions and new accounting pronouncements.
  • Assist with preparation of internal reporting packages to facilitate review of the financial statements with key constituents.
  • Facilitate interactions with external auditors. Work closely with external auditors on accounting and disclosure matters.
  • Facilitate interactions with third-party consultants who assist with our SOX compliance program.
  • Manage direct reports and develop the accounting team. Attract, develop and retain competent and committed staff. Establish clear performance objectives and provider career guidance for each direct report. Motivate and reinforce teamwork. Mentor staff and provide technical leadership.
  • Review work product of accounting staff.
  • Provide overall support and analysis to Controller and CFO.

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 8 to 10 years of progressive accounting and reporting experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of management experience.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • CPA with a foundation in Big 4 public accounting.
  • Experience in a public company. Experience with pharma/biotech companies is a plus.
  • Financial reporting experience, including extensive knowledge of GAAP and SEC rules and regulations.
  • Strong background in developing and implementing procedures, processes and operational controls.
  • Strong computer skills, including knowledge of computer financial applications, ERP packages, and consolidation and reporting systems are preferred. Proficiency in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Experience with Great Plains and Workiva Wdesk is a plus.
  • Self-starting personality; ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously; ability to delegate effectively.
  • Ability and inclination to roll up sleeves and dig in. Dependence on and confidence in own abilities to get things done.
