Role Summary:

The Director, Project Management provides strategic and tactical oversight of project plan design, development, communication and tracking for Arbutus Biopharma’s Development stage projects and alliance/partner projects. 

Duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Develops, implements, participates in and leads Project Management at all levels within Arbutus in order to ensure drug development projects achieve strategic objectives on time and within budget.
  • Drives coordination within cross-functional project teams to facilitate best-in-industry drug development.
  • Responsible for overall financial performance of development project(s) including budgeting and monitoring of spending, in conjunction with the Finance team and Functional heads.  Maintains and communicates financial justification for the project and all key decisions.  Also maintains a financial risk management approach regarding project(s).
  • Develops and maintains detailed project plans ensuring all activities (including pre-clinical, clinical, CMC, regulatory and business aspects) are captured and timelines are realistic, and achievable.  Produces and maintains project Gantt charts and summary reports for all programs. 
  • Identifies, critically assesses and communicates barriers and opportunities to the project timelines and budget. Leads and facilitates cross-functional project teams in order to mitigate project risks and opportunities and implement appropriate changes or solutions.
  • Provides critical assessment of project-related activities both in the “planning” stage and the “deliverable” stage to ensure appropriate steps are taken to meet both short-term and long-term goals.
  • Communicates overall project outcomes and progress to Executive Team, critically assessing, identifying and communicating any obstacles/issues/risks related to project achievement.
  • Develops project management processes and tools in order to facilitate achievement of corporate development objectives and alignment with strategic partners.
  • Acts as project manager for key Arbutus alliance partnership projects.
  • Other related duties as assigned.


  • Advanced degree in a related Life Sciences or Business discipline and at least 10 years’ experience in a biopharmaceutical environment or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum 8 years of directly related complex project management experience; experience in a fast-paced biotech environment an asset 
  • In depth knowledge of the drug development continuum, along with a proven track record of diversified project management experience
  • Demonstrated ability to manage large and complex projects to successful completion, on time and on budget
  • An experienced, hands-on manager; able think creatively and strategically; able to manage, coach and develop a high performing project team in a matrix environment
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication, presentation and negotiation skills; proven ability to influence policy and matters critical to business success
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven track record of building and maintaining strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including executives
  • Sound judgment and excellent conflict resolution capabilities and an ability to react quickly to changing needs
  • Solid understanding of budgeting and project accounting
  • Excellent organizational skills and able to develop and oversee detailed project plans
  • PMI certification or other relevant project management accreditation an asset
