About the role:

Reporting to the Senior Director of Finance, the Senior Associate, Accounting (“Senior Accountant”) is responsible for the provision and supervision of operational accounting, financial reporting and financial analysis in support of Arbutus’ external reporting requirements, internal financial processes, and product pipeline and collaborations.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Review accounts payable invoice and payment entries.
  • Manage vendor maintenance approval process.
  • Conduct research and provide recommendation on accounting treatment for certain new accounting issues.
  • Participate in the preparation of public filings (i.e., annual 10-K, quarterly 10-Q)
  • Oversee administration of Solium Shareworks stock option system.
  • Ensure employees receive the information and assistance they need from Solium.
  • Prepare routine equity reconciliations.
  • Prepare journal entries and generate reporting disclosures from Shareworks.  
  • Conduct routine treasury functions, including bank and investment reconciliations. Monitor cash activities and requirements. Prepare analysis for cash flow analysis for investment decisions and obtain interest rate quotes from treasury providers.
  • Manage and review month end bank reconciliations, prepayments, lease, capital assets and miscellaneous working papers.
  • Manage the accruals process.
  • Participate in quarterly reporting process, including completion of file sections and binders, preparation of leadsheets, and assisting with completion of reporting package, including XBRL
  • Participate in process improvements and internal controls documentation and other activities relating to SOX.
  • Participate in the implementation of various internal projects.
  • Train and educate other cross-functional staff on finance related initiatives as required.
  • Ensure that all activities are conducted in compliance with any pertinent regulatory requirements, and in accordance with scientific standards, ethical and professional values, established priorities and practices of the company.
  • Collaborates and interacts with others in a mutually supportive and cooperative manner that reinforces the concept that staff at all levels are expected to seek ways in which they can support and assist others to achieve expected results, as well as to be effective in their own accountability areas.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Complexity Scope & Discretion:
 

  • Works on issues where analysis of situation or data requires review of relevant factors.
  • Exercises judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action.
  • Receives assignments in the form of objectives with goals and the process by which to meet goals.
  • Initiates proactive discussions with managers and executives, as appropriate, to ensure awareness of key issues and developments on a timely basis.
  • Recommends changes to policies.
  • Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve results will cause delays in schedules.

Qualifications:

  • CPA designation required.
  • Minimum 2 years industry experience post Public Practice in a public company, required.
  • SOX environment experience preferred.
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Excel (pivot tables, formulas, and formatting) and MS Word.
  • Experience using Microsoft Dynamics / Great Plains a plus.
  • Exceptional organization skills with ability to prioritize tasks and assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; demonstrate resourcefulness and proven ability to troubleshoot and problem-solve.
  • Accounting issue GAAP analysis experience an asset.
  • Biotechnology industry experience preferred.
